The Lee County Office of Equal Opportunity investigates employment and housing discrimination complaints at the county level. This agency serves as the local equivalent to the Florida Commission on Human Relations and the Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

This office investigates employment complaints on behalf of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, strives to stop discrimination before it starts by increasing awareness in the community about discrimination laws, and informs consumers and businesses of the steps needed to comply with anti-discrimination laws. Training conferences and individual workshops for organizations are conducted to meet educational goals.

Know Your Rights

Who may file an employment discrimination charge?

  • Any individual who feels that his or her employment rights have been violated may file a charge.
  • An individual or organization may also file a complaint on behalf of another individual.

What is the criteria for filing an employment discrimination charge?

A charge must meet certain criteria, depending on where it is filed. In Lee County:

  • The employer must be located in Lee County, Florida
  • The employer must have a minimum of 6 full-time (31 hours/week or more) employees
  • A covered basis: race, color, sex, national origin, age (>16), marital status, disability or retaliation
  • Time limit to file a charge: 60 days from the date of the alleged discrimination
